How differently would we react to these photos if we knew nothing about them? If you’re rifling through a box of random old photos at a flea market you might have a chance of seeing mysterious, un-categorized photos. Otherwise you’re looking at photos that are already displayed under a heading, like landscape, family, weddings, the Old South, et al. The heading already biases your interpretation. For example, the photo showing thin strands of hair is poignant here because it’s under “self portraits in time of quarantine.” If it were in an exhibit called “Hair” or “Calligraphy” we would see it with very different feelings.
